For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. ---Ephesians 6:12

66 And Climbing... -- Bishops Critical of Notre Dame

It is great to see the number of bishops condemning Notre Dame and Father Jenkins for inviting pro-abortion President Obama to speak at their graduation ceremony on May 17th, and to present him with an honorary degree, climb to 66. You will notice that two more Cardinals have been added: Justin Cardinal Rigali has been a very staunch pro-life supporter and vocal critic of recent Obama decisions on embryonic stem cell research funding. Read his interview HERE. Also from Philadelphia, Anthony Cardinal Bevilacqua (Archbishop Emeritas) joins the list, bringing the Cardinal count to 4.

Here is the growing list of 66 bishops so far UPDATED 5-6-09 (from LifeSiteNews.com) with links to statements and articles:

I would think that before too long, any bishop or Cardinal not on the list will stick out like a sore, apathetic thumb in their own pro-choice sort of way... What do you think? Click on comments below.

Read the whole column by Kathleen Gilbert by clicking HERE.

I would also wonder that if Obama does end up desecrating this once prestigious Catholic university with his presence, will he request that all Christian symbols within view be covered up like he did at Jesuit founded, Georgetown University recently??? Read about THAT by clicking HERE.

I think it may look worse to join the list late than not at all. Draws too much attention to being wishy-washy.

Perhaps if the bishops had shown a clear and unflinching leadership of US Catholics for the last couple of generations, it would not have come to this pathetic point of criticizing an honorary degree. Notre Dame has a history of inviting first-year Presidents, just as the Basilica of St. John Lateran has a history of making the French head of state its honorary canon (Sarkozy is twice-divorced and pro-choice). Yet B16 didn't do anything to deviate from this status quo, and I haven't heard of a virulent grassroots movement flooding Rome with images of aborted babies. The bishops should focus on shepherding the churches in their care, and reconciling alienated Catholics. Instead of pandering to groupies, there is mission work to do. Criticizing Notre Dame doesn't advance that.

I agree with the first part of your statement, but also think the leadership on this issue should start somewhere... So why not here? Should we just throw in the towel and ignore all issues like this one simply because of recent history? Let the mission work begin on all levels!

Thanks for your input, whoever you are...
